Ukrainian Art Deco: Folk Traditions in a Modern Decorative Style

This series connects Ukrainian Petrykivka folk painting with Art Deco style, shaping a new decorative visual phenomenon where ancestral freedom and cultural memory exist side by side. Although Art Deco emerged as a modern style in the early twentieth century, its decorative principles — rhythm, ornament, and visual harmony — remain timeless.

Revisiting these aesthetics through Ukrainian folk traditions became a way to give Art Deco a contemporary voice while honoring the rituals, symbols, and everyday scenes of ancestral Ukrainian life. Floral patterns, graphic stylisation, and ornamental balance reflect both folk painting and Art Deco canons, where beauty and structure are inseparable.

Gold accents and circular forms appear throughout the series, sometimes defining the composition itself, sometimes shaping the canvas. The circle, traditionally associated with the sun, was a powerful symbol in Art Deco and remains deeply rooted in Ukrainian visual culture.

Executed as Art Deco wall art, the series reveals the artistic soul of Ukrainian folk culture, where a slower, grounded way of life — connected to land, craft, and animals — continues to serve as a source of renewal and creative strength. The colour palette draws on rich, complex tones inspired by boho aesthetics, reinforcing the decorative and atmospheric character of the works.
