UKRAINIAN CONTEMPORARY ARTIST
MARYNA MELNYK

Maryna Melnyk is a Ukrainian contemporary artist who works primarily with painting, using it as a way to reflect on memory, symbolism, and personal lived experience within today’s Ukrainian cultural context.
Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, Maryna was introduced to visual thinking at an early age. Her first mentor was her father, a trained artist and fashion designer, whose professional discipline and sensitivity to form, rhythm, and detail shaped her early understanding of art as both craft and expression. This foundation continues to influence her approach to painting today.
Maryna began her professional career working in Kyiv as a television makeup artist and visual practitioner, a role she held for fifteen years. This experience developed her strong sense of colour, composition, and the human presence, while also teaching her to work intuitively and decisively. During this time, painting remained an essential but secondary part of her life, sustained alongside her professional commitments.
A turning point came during the pandemic, when a forced pause in her work created space for reflection. In this period of stillness, Maryna consciously returned to painting and began to shape her artistic practice as her primary focus. Since then, she has developed a body of work that places her within the field of contemporary Ukrainian artists working today.
Following the full-scale war in Ukraine, Maryna relocated with her family to the United Kingdom. She is currently based in the UK, where she continues her artistic practice and actively contributes to the cultural and educational landscape. As a Ukrainian artist working internationally, her practice reflects both continuity with Ukrainian visual traditions and a dialogue with contemporary contexts. Her work sits at the intersection of Ukrainian art and contemporary painting. Drawing on symbolic language, everyday imagery, and cultural references, Maryna creates paintings that engage with ideas of home, resilience, and identity. Her approach places her among contemporary Ukrainian painters whose work bridges personal narrative and broader cultural experience.
Alongside her studio practice, Maryna works as an art educator and facilitator. She leads workshops and weekly art sessions, including programmes for Ukrainian refugees, creating spaces where artistic practice supports connection, reflection, and cultural continuity. This educational dimension informs her artistic work without overshadowing it, reinforcing her belief in art as a living, relational process.
Maryna Melnyk’s work exists within the broader field of Ukrainian painting today. While remaining closely connected to Ukraine, her paintings address experiences and emotions that resonate with audiences beyond national and cultural boundaries.
