Ukrainian Sun: Contemporary Ukrainian Art as Reflection and Inner Resistance
Ukrainian Sun emerged as a personal artistic response to the war in Ukraine and became part of a broader field of contemporary Ukrainian art. The first sketch of the series was created within the first weeks after the outbreak of hostilities, at a moment when visual language became the only possible way to process emotional shock and inner tension. The spontaneous appearance of the image of the Mother of God was not a conceptual decision, but an intuitive reaction — a search for protection, meaning, and inner support during a time of deep uncertainty.
As the series developed, its visual language naturally aligned with elements reminiscent of Boichukism and Ukrainian modernism. This affinity feels deeply rooted in childhood memories and in the monumental, solemn character of this artistic movement, where religious imagery, symbolic clarity, and dignity of form play a central role. These qualities resonated strongly with the artist’s inner processes, allowing personal experience to merge with a broader visual memory of Ukrainian art.
Ukrainian Sun is a reflective series built on layered symbolism. While deeply connected to the Ukrainian context, its themes extend beyond national boundaries. Ideas of motherhood, protection, and the archetype of the Berehynia — the female guardian of home and well-being — form a universal narrative of womanhood as both nurturer and protector. The image of Mary appears here not only as a religious figure, but as a timeless symbol of care, resilience, and quiet strength.
Although influenced by Ukrainian modernism and Boichukism, the series does not replicate historical styles. Instead, it reinterprets them through a contemporary lens, continuing a dialogue with a period in Ukrainian art marked by freedom, dignity, and creative independence. Created by a contemporary Ukrainian artist, Ukrainian Sun becomes an invitation to reflect, observe, and engage with images that unfold slowly, encouraging prolonged contemplation and personal interpretation.
